Founded in 2013 by our director Michelle, our journey began with a single mat Pilates class tailored to address low back pain at a local physiotherapy clinic in Balaclava. As demand grew, so did Michelle’s commitment to serving the community. In 2020, Michelle assumed ownership of the business, expanding our offerings to the Glen Eira community by hiring out various spaces in the area.

 

Even amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, these mat classes continued to grow in popularity as people struggled to stay physically active and socially connected. Michelle observed that the real value of her classes extended beyond just physical exercise. Zoom waiting rooms became a safe space for clients to share what books they were currently reading, and from that, Michelle witnessed many new friendships blossom. She thought to herself if she ever opened a studio, she’d add a little bookshelf in reception so that people could still come to chat about books.

 

In 2023, fueled by our community's support, the decision was made to open a Pilates studio. Together with Michelle’s partner Nang and his design expertise, they developed their own version of the Pilates springboard. The springboard, being an extension of Pilates matwork, is a nod to Back2Back’s roots, while offering something very new to the Melbourne Pilates scene. We even added the community bookshelf!
